John Gould

(1804-1881)

John Gould was 14 when his father became a gardener at Windsor Castle and it was there that Gould pursued his early interest
in birds. He studied taxidermy which led to his collecting bird skins and by the time he was 47 he had over 75,000 specimens.
He published at least 6 works, each consisting of multiple volumes of folio size, depicting birds from every continent except Africa. His wife Elizabeth worked with him until her early death in 1841, after which Gould hired Henry Richter, William Hart, and Josef Wolf to continue the artistic work, as well as the lithographic endeavor.
