United States Pacific Rail Road Expedition and Survey:

 
The U.S. Government began the surveys to find the best routes for building the transcontinental railroad. Surveyors, artists, and scientists were among the men chosen to travel westward amassing as much information as they could along the routes they were assigned.  There were 12 volumes published by
the Washington printing office 1855-1860.
